this is anecdotal but i noticed something interesting when i was curious and looked up posts or threads about al-Ma’ari on atheist and vegan forums. Even though historically speaking al-Ma’ari’s veganism is more exceptional because of how it seemingly uniquely actually matches up with modern definitions of veganism in his rejection of consuming of dairy, honey and the wearing of clothing made from animals (I cant think of any other historic examples of vegetarianism that speak against all of those) the atheist forums seemed more shocked and almost put into a state of cognitive dissonance at how a Syrian Arab writer from 1,000 years ago could reject religion while the vegan forums seemed more like “Neat! I like how he said these things!” and didnt as strongly talk about the supposed contradiction given the cultural and geographic context he lived in. if that makes sense.
